In addition to the services NPI directly provides, we also host various programs that serve both adults and youth:
The Culinary Academy of Las Vegas: An internationally recognized model for workplace education and vocational training, the Culinary Academy of Las Vegas (CALV) is a partnership between the Culinary Union Local 226, Bartenders Local 165, and 26 major properties on the Las Vegas Strip. The CALV offers vocational skills training, customer service education, employability basics, and English language instruction. Each year, the CALV trains several thousand people for entry-level and incumbent positions in kitchen, food and beverage, and housekeeping classifications. As part of their real- world training, students learn to prepare and serve quality food at moderate prices at the Westside Bistro, a full-service restaurant, and through the CALV’s catering operations, both available to the public. The CALV’s training is licensed by the Nevada Commission on Post-Secondary Education.
The Citizenship Project: Founded by the Culinary Union, along with other organizations, this program provides free guidance through the citizenship process for union members and their families. Clients receive help in applying for citizenship and preparing for the exam. Since its establishment in 2001, the Citizen Project has helped more than 8,000 people become U.S. citizens, thereby securing their families’ futures.
Nevada JobConnect: As one of NPI’s collaborating partners, this outreach office provides clients with information on, and access to, job training, education, and employment services. JobConnect, part of Nevada’s Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation, also offers funding for training through the Career Enhancement Program.
Vocational English for Speakers of Other Languages Classes: Taught by Culinary Academy of Las Vegas instructors, these classes are designed to develop the English language skills needed to succeed in CALV’s vocational training and in the hospitality industry. Students learn relevant vocabulary and grammar, practice interviewing techniques, and complete job applications.
Clark County School District Adult Education Program: More than a hundred adult learners attend weekly classes in English as a Second Language, math, science, health, social studies, and English literature. They also take GED prep classes and study for the state math proficiency test.
Fully Accessible Playground: For the first time, children in North Las Vegas with physical disabilities can enjoy a fully accessible playground, complete with safety signs in Braille, rubberized surfaces, and wheelchair ramps. The playground will be a key component of the Child Care Cooperative, to be housed on the NPI campus. By providing affordable early childhood education, the cooperative will remove a significant barrier for the students and clients of NPI and the CALV, allowing them to get the employment and training services they need to become self-sufficient.
